Join us on March 8th at the Strathearn Community League for an Introductory Filmmaking Workshop presented by Spencer Shortt.
This hands-on workshop is designed to guide you through the fundamentals of filmmaking, from the spark of an idea to the final edit. Whether you're working with a smartphone or a professional camera, you'll learn practical skills to help you create compelling visual stories. No experience? No problem! This workshop is beginner-friendly, fun, and interactive.
What You’ll Learn
Pre-Production: Laying the Groundwork
Great films start with great ideas. But where do those ideas come from? You’ll learn how to draw inspiration from your surroundings—your community, family, music, literature, and even AI-powered idea generators.
Learn storytelling fundamentals using Dan Harmon’s Story Circle and Hitchcock’s famous Bomb Theory.
Practice the Show, Don’t Tell technique to enhance your storytelling.
Get insights into scriptwriting, including free tools and effective methods.
Explore visual storytelling techniques like storyboarding and mood boards to bring your vision to life.
Production: Capturing the Magic
Now it’s time to shoot! Using the W.A.F.F.L.E framework, you’ll gain hands-on experience with essential filmmaking techniques:
White Balance: Learn how to manipulate color tones for stunning visuals.
Audio: Discover why sound is half of the viewing experience and how to get crystal-clear recordings.
Framing: Experiment with composition and framing techniques to make your shots cinematic.
Focus: Explore creative focus pulls and learn how to achieve sharp, intentional shots.
Lighting: Learn to work with natural and available light to create visually striking scenes.
Exposure: Master the exposure triangle and understand how to use histograms and waveforms for perfect lighting.
Post-Production: Bringing it All Together
Editing is where the magic happens. You’ll be introduced to free editing software for both mobile and desktop, as well as tips for organizing footage and maintaining quality throughout the editing process.
Understand the importance of backups and file management.
Learn how pre-production planning influences editing, using examples from James Gunn, Zack Snyder, and Matthew Vaughn.
Explore essential editing techniques through a Studio Binder tutorial.
Get an introduction to effects, transitions, and colour grading to enhance your final film.
Bonus: Location Scouting Adventure
For those interested, we’ll take a short trip to the Muttart Conservatory and Tawatina Bridge to explore real-world locations for filming inspiration.
